Celebrating St. George's day in the Rhodope mountain

St George's Day (Гергьовден, Gergyovden) is a public holiday in Bulgaria that takes place on 6 May each year. This year for the first time I spent St. George's day in the Rhodope mountain with friends.

On Wednesday morning we arrived at the small village of Varvara, near Pazardzhik. There is a very nice tradition that I wanted to see for some time now. On 6th of May all the people of the village are going to a hill in the Rhodope mountain, named after St. George. There they are spending some nice time all together singing, dancing and having some good wine, rakia and lamb. In the afternoon, around 3 pm. the celebrations are moved back to the main square of the village.

I have to say that it was very difficult for me to climb the hill but I am proud that I did it. It was very nice experience... even if I will need some time to recover :)
