Let me share with you my idea of the perfect road trip across Western Bulgaria or how to visit some of not so well known but absolutely amazing places in the area and experience the Western Bulgaria countryside in a new and different.
Let's start from the Pirin Mountain and the village of Delchevo located in Southwest Bulgaria - a small and peaceful place to get away from all the noise and stress. The only thing disturbing the silence is the sound of the ringing bell coming from the small church in the center of the village.
There are several family Bead and Breakfast where you can stay. I am recommending the "Pavlovata kushta" hostel.
The next stop is the village of Varvara located in the Rhodope Mountains near Pazardzhik. It's famous with its mineral springs and surrounding nature.
In the forest around the village you will see many small chapels, that are still functional thanks to care of the local people.
If you want to spend here a couple of days to explore the surrounding areas you here is one good option. You can stay in a small bungalow in "Aqua-park Varvara" and enjoy a relaxing evening around the mineral pool.
I suggest you make a stop at Kostenets where you can enjoy the nature and visit the lovely Kostenets waterfall. It's about 45 minutes drive from Varvara so it could be a perfect destination for one day trip as well.
You should definitely stop at Vratsa for a few days and explore the city and its surroundings. And I am not saying this just because it's my home town but because there is so much for you to do and see - especially if you are а nature lover.
You can spend a day claiming the Vrachanski Balkan up to the Skaklia waterfall. If you have enough power left you can even go above the waterfall and enjoy the amazing view.
Another way to spend your day is walking the "Borov kamak" eco-trail near Zlatograd - a small village near Vratsa. The eco-trail is called after the waterfall - the second waterfall on the territory of "Vrachanski Balkan" Nature Park. The view form the top is stunning!
Near Vratsa - at less than 16 km, is located another extraordinary place - the small village of Lilyache. You will be amazed by what is hiding there - it's a real natural wonder!
"Boji most" (God's bridge) - just follow the road down and you will find it.
Last but not least, here is another of my favorite natural wonders in the western Bulgaria. I think it’s a perfect place for you to finish your journey - the beautiful rock formations near the village of Belogradchik.
Of course there is so much more that you could see and explore in this part of Bulgaria. For example there are the Ledenika cave, near Vratsa, and the Magurata cave, near Belogradchik. If you could you should go to the Rila Mountain and visit the Seven Rila Lakes. But I will leave you to discover the rest on your own.
My advice is, if you have the time, just keep going and always choose to take the off road instead of the beaten tourist path. :)
