St. Varvara church, Varvara village (Pazardzhik)

The small village of Varvara, famous for its hot mineral springs, has other attractions to offer to the visitors as well. It is situated at the foot of the Northern slopes of the Western Rhodope Mountain, 20 km west of Pazardzhik. Several Thracian tombs are found on the territory of Varvara. There are also many small chapels in the forests around the area, like St. Marina for example.

One of the best preserved chapels is the small "St. Varvara" church, build in 1814. During the years a small village was formed around the church. Аs per the legend it has been named after the chapel’s patron saint - Varvara. It may seem a bit strange that the church is half built under the ground. When I asked why, I was told by the locals that it wasn't possible to build it higher back then, because of the times they were living in - the times of the Ottoman rule.

Being inside, you can still feel the spirit of the past, which has been preserved in the drawings on the church's walls.

If you haven't been there you definitely should visit this aria!

Celebrating St. George's day in the Rhodope mountain

St George's Day (Гергьовден, Gergyovden) is a public holiday in Bulgaria that takes place on 6 May each year. This year for the first time I spent St. George's day in the Rhodope mountain with friends.

On Wednesday morning we arrived at the small village of Varvara, near Pazardzhik. There is a very nice tradition that I wanted to see for some time now. On 6th of May all the people of the village are going to a hill in the Rhodope mountain, named after St. George. There they are spending some nice time all together singing, dancing and having some good wine, rakia and lamb. In the afternoon, around 3 pm. the celebrations are moved back to the main square of the village.

I have to say that it was very difficult for me to climb the hill but I am proud that I did it. It was very nice experience... even if I will need some time to recover :)

The Old Town of Nessebar!

The old town of Nessebar is definitely one of my favorite places in Bulgaria since I was a child! We used to go there each summer during our family holidays. I really hope that I will have some time go back there this year..the last time I went to Nessebar was 6 - 7 years ago.

One free advice: you should visit the old town early in the morning so you can avoid the crowd. This is the perfect time of the day when you can really enjoy the authentic atmosphere while walking the empty streets.
